The Well of Life (Turkey)

In an old Ottoman era Villa in Mardin, the local police officer offered to double as a tourist guide and drew our attention to the well of life. The water sprinkles at 'birth' into the basin of 'childhood', from where it continues into the bigger basin of 'parenthood', and finally into the biggest basin of 'old age'. And when the water leaves the trough, symbollically representing 'death', it irrigates the fruitful plains of the Oronthes - the basis of 'life'. What a beautiful symbolisation of life we thought!

Lebensbrunnen (Türkei)

In einer alten ottomanischen Villa in Mardin hat uns der örtliche Polizist den Lebensbrunnen gezeigt. Das Wasser blättscherte zur Geburt in das kleine Becken der Kindheit, von dort in eine grösseres Becken der Elternschaft, und schliesslich ein noch grösseres des Alters. Und wenn das Wasser den Brunnen verlässt, den Tod symbolisierend, bewässert es die fruchtbaren Ebenen des Oronthes, Grundlage des Lebens.
