Left turns into Iraq (Syria)
Immediately after entering north-east Syria from Turkey a large road sign indicated a left turn to Iraq. No town or village name was indicated, just Ir a q. As we continued further south through the desert the isolation was only broken by the occasional roadside café. For some reason all of them they were called Café Bagdad. When we reached the second turn left into Ira q, we stopped and looked east towards a huge grey wall of thunder clouds; no visibility, no sound, just like an enormous curtain that hung between us and the place where terrible things were happening and people were being killed each day. We continued further south.
